An operating system (OS) must interact with the hardware on which it runs. An OS like Ubuntu comes packed with a library of drivers to be able to run on many different hardware configurations. The Raspberry Pi (RPi) is a particularly unusual breed of hardware, however. Thankfully, some helpful folks took the Debian distribution of Linux and customized it for RPi hardware. Of course, they named their new distribution Raspbian ☺
